Incusia vs Square Invoices

Free to send. Expensive to get paid.

Switch if you email invoices and clients pay by card online. On Square Free that card is 3.3% + 30¢, and one $500 payment already costs more than a month of Starter.

Stay if you take cards in person, you run a till, or the client pays cash or check. That is the job Square is priced for.

Last reviewed 7 November 2026Checked against Square's invoices pricing page on the date printed in the comparison. The date on this page is 7 November 2026.

Square Invoices, checked 7 November 2026, charges nothing to send an invoice on Square Free. A card paid online or through that invoice is 3.3% + 30¢. Plus is $49 a month per location. Premium is $149 a month per location. Incusia Starter is $9 a month for unlimited invoices, and that price is not a cut of the job.

  • The fee is on the payment

A $500 invoice paid by card on Square Free costs $16.80. A $1,500 invoice costs $49.80. A $3,000 invoice costs $99.30. Starter stays $9 for the month.

  • Plus and Premium are a shop

Plus is $49 a month per location and Premium is $149, with online cards at 2.9% + 30¢. Those plans are priced for a retailer who already has a point of sale, not for a person who emails invoices.

  • The till is where Square wins

In person, Square Free is 2.6% + 15¢, Plus is 2.5% + 15¢, and Premium is 2.4% + 15¢. Cash and check are free. Incusia has no counter and no card reader.

What a card payment costs on the free plan

Square's invoices pricing page, checked 7 November 2026, includes invoicing on every plan. Square Free is $0 a month per location. The online rate, which the page says applies to card payments made online or through an invoice, is 3.3% + 30¢. Plus drops that rate to 2.9% + 30¢ and costs $49 a month per location. Premium is the same 2.9% + 30¢ and costs $149 a month per location.

The table is one paid invoice against one month of software. It is not a claim that $9 includes card processing. If the client pays an Incusia invoice by card, Stripe charges its own fee, and that percentage is not printed on our pricing page. The same honesty applies in the other direction: cash and check on Square are free, so a client who never pays by card does not owe the 3.3%.

A single $500 card payment is already $16.80, which is more than Starter. Three invoices in a month do not change the $9. They multiply Square's line. People comparing a percentage bill with a flat one can also read the PayPal invoicing fees. If you want to see a PDF before you pick a tool, the free invoice generator makes one without an account.

Square Free, card paid through an invoice
fee = amount × 0.033 + 0.30

$500 → $16.80
$1,500 → $49.80
$3,000 → $99.30

Incusia software is $9 that month, for every invoice.
A card fee on an Incusia invoice is separate, and it is not on the pricing page.
Cash and check on Square are $0.

The paid plans are built for a shop

Plus and Premium are not a cheaper way to email a freelance invoice. The monthly fee applies to each location you run. Plus adds payment schedules, custom invoice templates, and a $10 cap on ACH bank transfers. Premium adds the lowest in-person rate, 2.4% + 15¢, and 24/7 phone support. The free plan's own card lists invoices and recurring invoices, estimates and contracts, and projects.

The rate cut from 3.3% to 2.9% saves $4 on every $1,000 collected online. Plus at $49 a location needs about $12,250 of those payments in a month before the lower rate covers the subscription, and the 2.9% + 30¢ is still there. A person sending invoices from a laptop does not get a till, a barcode printer, or inventory in return for that $49. Stripe Invoicing is the other percentage people confuse with a software plan. It is a different bill, and it is not this one.

In person is the case I will not argue you out of. Tap, dip, or swipe on Square Free is 2.6% + 15¢, and Tap to Pay takes a contactless card or Apple Pay on the phone. Incusia does not stand on a counter. If the card is present, stay on Square.

  • Square Free: $0 per location. Online or invoice cards 3.3% + 30¢. In person 2.6% + 15¢.
  • Plus: $49 per location each month. Online cards 2.9% + 30¢. ACH via invoice is 1% with a $1 minimum and a $10 cap.
  • Premium: $149 per location each month. In person 2.4% + 15¢. Phone support is listed as 24/7.
  • Incusia Starter: $9 a month, unlimited invoices. Pro is $29. Lifetime is $99 once. There is no free plan.

What you keep if you leave the counter behind

Finish any Square invoice a client might still pay. A second request for the same job is how people pay twice. Cash and check do not need a new tool. ACH on Square Free is 1% with a $1 minimum and no cap, so a single $500 bank payment is $5, which is less than a month of Starter. The card table is the switch. The bank table, for one small payment, can still be Square.

Incusia bills the software on the web. Cancellation is one click in the dashboard, and you keep access until the period ends. Square Free has nothing to cancel. Plus and Premium are a location subscription, and the pricing page says you can cancel or switch. The 7 day trial on Incusia is full Pro access and does not ask for a card. On day 7 the account is read only until you choose Starter, Pro, or Lifetime. It does not become a free plan.

  • Let open Square invoices finish where the client already has the link.
  • Stay for in-person cards, a till, cash, and check.
  • Switch when online card fees on emailed invoices are the line you notice.

Where Square Invoices is strong

Square wins when the card is in the room. The free plan takes tap, dip, and swipe at 2.6% + 15¢, cash and check cost nothing, and the same login runs the till, the items, and the invoice. A client who already pays at the counter is not going to learn a new link. Plus and Premium exist for that shop, per location, with a lower in-person rate as you step up. An invoicing tool with no reader cannot do that job, and this page is not going to pretend it can.

  • In-person cards, including Tap to Pay
  • A till, items, and inventory around the invoice
  • Cash and check at no processing fee
  • Nothing monthly on Square Free until a card is charged

Where Incusia is different

Starter is $9 a month for unlimited invoices, locked at the rate you sign up at. The price does not take 3.3% of a $3,000 job. Reminders are on every paid plan. Estimates a client can sign are on Starter. There is no till, and there is no free plan. Pro at $29 adds recurring invoices, late fees, and time tracking. Lifetime is $99 once.

  • $9 a month on Starter, not a percentage of the invoice
  • Unlimited invoices on every paid plan
  • No location fee and no point of sale
  • 7 day trial with full Pro access, no card, then a paid plan

FAQ

Common questions

What does Square charge when an invoice is paid by card?

On Square Free, checked 7 November 2026, a card paid online or through an invoice is 3.3% + 30¢. A $500 invoice is $16.80, a $1,500 invoice is $49.80, and a $3,000 invoice is $99.30. Plus and Premium charge 2.9% + 30¢, after the monthly location fee.

Is Square Invoices free?

Sending is free on Square Free, at $0 a month per location. You pay when a card is charged, or 1% on ACH with a $1 minimum. Cash and check are free. Incusia is not free to send. Starter is $9 a month. There is no free plan.

When is the 3.3% cheaper than $9?

On a single small card payment. 3.3% + 30¢ reaches $9 at about $264. Below that, one card payment costs less than a month of Starter. A $500 invoice does not. A quiet month in which nobody pays also costs $0 on Square Free and $9 on Starter.

What do Plus and Premium add?

Plus is $49 a month per location. Premium is $149 a month per location. Both drop online invoice cards to 2.9% + 30¢. Plus adds schedules, custom templates, and a $10 ACH cap. Premium adds 2.4% + 15¢ in person and 24/7 phone. They are shop plans.

Does the $9 include the card fee?

No. Starter is the software. If a client pays an Incusia invoice by card, Stripe charges its own processing fee. That percentage is not on the Incusia pricing page, so it is not printed here. Do not read $9 as a free card payment.

Should I stay if I take cards at the counter?

Yes. Square Free is 2.6% + 15¢ for tap, dip, or swipe, and Tap to Pay takes contactless cards and Apple Pay on the phone. Incusia has no card reader and no till. The comparison is for invoices you email, not for a line of people at a counter.

What about an ACH payment on Square?

Square Free charges 1% with a $1 minimum and no cap. Plus and Premium keep the 1% and cap it at $10. A $500 bank payment on Free is $5, which is less than Starter. A $3,000 bank payment is $30. The card table and the bank table are different decisions.

Does Square lock the processing rate?

The invoices pricing page checked on 7 November 2026 does not say the rate is locked. Incusia locks the software price you sign up at, in the Terms, for that account. Neither product locks a card network. A later Square rate is Square's to change.

Can I bring Square clients into Incusia?

There is no one-click import from Square. Add the clients you still bill and reissue open invoices so there is one pay link. Leave a Square invoice in place until it is paid or you have voided it. A freelance list is an afternoon, not a migration project.

What happens after the 7 day trial?

The trial is 7 days of full Pro access, and it does not ask for a card. It is not a free plan. On day 7 the account is read only until you choose Starter at $9, Pro at $29, or Lifetime at $99. Nothing you created is deleted.

Or send the invoice without a cut of the payment

Square Free is $0 until a card is charged. A card paid through the invoice is 3.3% plus 30¢.

Written by Abass Gass

I kept meeting people who were glad Square did not charge to send the invoice, and then watched 3.3% come off a few thousand dollars. The till is a different product, and I will not argue with a card reader. I built Incusia for the invoice that goes out by email, and I did not want the software bill to be a percentage of the job.
